Our friends at Manawatu Sound HUB have put together a magnificent and exceptional car for us… It’s a 2017 Holden Commodore VF (Holden is the brand used by GM for its cars built in Australia).
The audio system is remarkable. Opting for two RFL amplifiers is no small decision. And that detail alone makes it clear that this isn’t Matt Bower’s first time at this. It’s the hallmark recognized by all car audio enthusiasts: “He’s one of us.” In a high-end audio system, you need enough power to maintain control and ensure everything responds as intended. We can draw an analogy here with a car’s engine. It’s always better with a big engine...
So Matt hooked up an RFL4001D to four TX612 subwoofers in two sealed enclosures. He didn’t push anything to the limit; he’s keeping some power in reserve at all times… It’s perfection. Precision, speed, musical quality, listening comfort—it’s all there… nothing is missing. Plus, the layout of the subs in the trunk is really great. The four visible magnets look much better than the cones…
As for the speakers, it’s an RFL4120—with its incredible power and musicality—driving two pairs of TX465S (voted Speakers of the Year). The midrange is sublime, the clarity is perfect, it’s fast, and it sounds great. And there’s always plenty of headroom… Nothing is pushed to its limit… Well done, Matt.
For outdoor listening, you can switch off the RFL4120 and switch to a TX480D, which powers a pair of RTX654s and their RTX2BT tweeters. They’re all installed in the trunk. As soon as you lift the trunk lid, the speakers are in the perfect listening position. The amp/speaker pairing is, once again, very clever. It sounds loud, it sounds clear, it projects far, and on top of that, the balance with the four TX612 subs is perfect when the trunk is open... A true work of art...
This Holden Commodore is certainly one of the finest MTX installations in the world... Especially since it’s not a show car, but a daily driver.
